The North Norfolk village with the Fascinating History
SALTHOUSE

from the heath c 1820

Here is a closer view of the church and churchyard. To the left of the church on the same level you can see the lump of foliage that covers an ancient ruin in the western corner of the churchyard.

This ruin was excavated by Charles Linnell of the Norfolk Archaeological Society in 1936, and discovered to have been a consecrated chapel, but little more than that is known about it.

The chapel marked on the coast road in the photograph is quite different. This was the third and last Methodist chapel in Salthouse. It was disbanded in 1967  for lack of congregation and support but in its day,  in the early 1900s,  it was the centre of a terrific uplifting and thriving community.
